Moblin v2.1 on a Netbook
Ive been playing a little with the latest Moblin release this afternoon and Im actually thinking of trying to run it full-time on a netbook. Theres a few holes yet, but it does offers me much of what Im looking for in a smartbook — a lightweight operating system and good browsing experience. My wireless broadband modem isnt working, nor is my sound or my Bluetooth, so theres a few gotchas just yet. The Bluetooth might be easily fixable in my netbook BIOS, but no sound on the Toshiba NB205 is a reported known bug. In this 11 minute video, I think youll see why Im walking away impressed. The user interface is intuitive, although it will take some getting used to, and the overall environment is fluid and snappy. Bear in mind that Im running a live image from a USB drive, so an actual installation should perform even better. Maybe its time to turn the Toshiba into a triple-booter: Windows XP, Windows 7 and Moblin!

“Mr. Compromise” considers the trade-offs between netbooks, the new class of mini laptop computers, and full-sized laptops.

How turn off PC? I have Acer TravelMate 15″ 5335
Please help me
@KevinCTofel moblin (now meego) is still not fully solid.. it has many bugs, some which make it freeze up. I really hope intime it becomes solid.
Ugly hand. (no offense)
it’s only live cd? Can it be installed?
@cyberlord64 thanks! i’ll try it immediately XD
00:57 Steave Jobs?
not that i didn’t like this os but i run this on my 8gb acer aspire one and it was a lot slower than linux mint i am using now. plus no sound
. For netbooks i would strongly recomend linux mint with arora as a web browser, vlc as media player and quod libet as a music player. If this combination runs fast on my aspire one then it will run lightning fast on any other netbook
@aris07 te gustaría esto en tu netbook? avísame
@The2010World Yeah, I just got my netbook. Dual boot with XP works fine. Moblin works awesome! So smooth. Myzone hangs sometimes, but I still love it!. Sound output works on my Netbook. Wifi works great also. For a netbook, this is a Great OS. (Acer Aspire One User). (This comment was posted with Moblin ;-D)
@meesieb get Moblin not MeeGo, Moblin is ready for home users MeeGo is not, yeah go with a decent cheap netbook and install this Acer Aspire One works well with Wi-Fi and LAN (Wired)
WOW!. Dam’n that’s really awesome! I’ll defenitely install this as soon as i’ve got my netbook!
the browser really is awesome!! After all its Firefox….
looks nice!!!I want to try this OS.
@swingking338 Its dead now … its being merged with maemo from nokia right now to form meeGo
Moblin is really Awsome!!!
I love moblin, runs great on my Eee 1005HAB. does Wine available for Moblin 2.1 and does it run good?
Hey, Great video! How did you manage to install it on your USB flash? I don’t want to mess my internal hdd up so I was hoping that you can send me a link of a usb guide.
Thanks!
@ramoj02 there is a “ubuntu moblin remix” though
It looks awesome…
This OS works on eeePC 701?
there are HUGE differences in “not working” and not CONNECTING….if it doesn’t connect, that’s 100% your fault….
you’re only shooting yourself in the foot going from linux back to windows because something doesn’t work the 1 time you try it…
ive figured out that ubuntu/linux is well worth the time spent learning how to use it….its a better OS, all around, its like a bizarro mac os…i never used my netbook before i switched, now i use my netbook more than my desktop.
Its nice but for whatever reason it says “wifi unavailable” on much crucial. A big let down since I like the interface. Oh well, back to windows xp.
@davvvideos i agree!!!!!do u watch david pogue too?
lol!! this is soo funny!!
@Legolover64 The netbooks I’ve used barely handled firefox!
They’re AMAZING at their job, low priced, extremely portable, and simple computing and internet browsing
They weren’t meant for games, photoshop, etc, sure they can run photoshop, but it’s extremely slow, and who would ever want to edit photos/play games on a tiny screen?
Netbooks are, for the most part, junk. I’ve had an Acer Aspire one, Samsung NC10, Sony M series, and currently an Acer Ferrari One 200. The others I found unusable. The Sony especially. The Ferrari i like – it’s actually fast enough to do things other than basic web browsing. The rest are only suitable for basic web browsing and that’s it, which I can do on my iPhone 4 anyway, making them redundant.
he is apple cheerleader its ok because apple is great. but apple dont like netbook and because of that he bashes them.its not cool
netbooks are for fags
I say stick with desktops and have fun outside and enjoy the sun
ha great bike. it reminds me of the one my sis got at age 7 lol. great vid
…the woman has a blank microsoft word document open
lol; “It’s a little inconvenient, but WOW the mileage.”
The real revolution comes with 15″ $200 ARM Linux Android/Ubuntu models that are imminent.
Using cloud computing you can actually run more powerful web based applications. The battery life is going to be 20 hours, thinner, lighter and definitely much cheaper.
The inconveniences are made compulsory by Intel and Microsoft.
Reason: Intel and Microsoft are too afraid to replace the whole Laptop market with such cheaper laptops.
In fact, a bigger screen and a bigger keyboard would cost less than $50 to add, but they won’t let you do it.
Intel already lost 95% of their profit margins and Microsoft loses 75% of their profit margins because of the Netbooks.
yes, because we all must have the absolutely most powerful and huge computer, car, or whatever on the market, even if we wouldnt use half of its capabilities.
if this guy really wanted to make the compromise point, he should have also included the compromise that netbooks give you compared to smaller devices, like smart phones and MIDs. as it is, he has only done half his jobtruly a man of compromise.
Those specs may not meet Super Duper Crysis Special Amazing Friggin Edition requisites, but are far enough to WORK. But maybe computers were not intended for that, my fault.
Awesome video
